TAMPA - University of South Florida starting K Delbert Alvarado underwent an MRI Thursday for a groin injury that has sidelined him the past two days.

It's unknown when Alvarado will be able to return to practice or if he'll be available for the season opener Sept. 1 against Elon.

A sophomore from Robinson, Alvarado won the starting job midway through last season. He made five of nine field goals, including a Big East-record 56-yarder against Syracuse.

With Alvarado indefinitely sidelined, juniors Justin Teachey and Morgan Riley, of Seminole, handled all of the field goal and extra point duties Thursday.

Teachey handles USF's kickoffs and is the Bulls' starting punter, while Riley is a walk-on transfer from Division I-AA Murray State.

GROTHE WATCH: Sophomore QB Matt Grothe (hip flexor strain) missed his third consecutive day of practice and remains "day-to-day," USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

Grothe is expected to resume practicing by Monday, at the latest.

Also, freshman C Sampson Genus was slowed Thursday by an ankle injury.

ODDS AND ENDS: Junior LG Matt Huners, who suffered a torn ACL in the spring game, said he hopes to return to practice in October. Huners started 11 games last season. … Freshman LB Alonzo McQueen has been moved to the defensive line. "He was the big story today," Leavitt said. "He looked exceptional." … Catch 47 is tentatively scheduled to broadcast Leavitt's weekly Tuesday press conferences at 1 p.m. beginning next week. … USF's fan fest is Saturday from 3:30-6 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. Admission is free.
