DEVIL RAYS

Rays Option 2 To Durham

Published: Jun 11, 2007

MIAMI - A brief homestand that opens Tuesday night against the Padres will feature two new relievers in the Devil Rays' bullpen.

After returning home from Miami on Sunday night, the Rays optioned struggling right-handers Chad Orvella and Tim Corcoran to Durham. The team is expected to make corresponding moves to replace them today.

The moves were expected after Orvella and Corcoran each played a key role in both of the bullpen's late-game collapses last week.

Orvella couldn't record an out in the ninth inning Tuesday at Toronto, opening the door for a six-run Blue Jays inning in which he was charged with three runs. He allowed three more Friday as the Rays blew an 8-2 lead against the Marlins in a 14-8 loss. His ERA had ballooned to 14.63 in just more than a month since being recalled from Durham.

Corcoran, meanwhile, had come to resemble a golfer with a case of the yips on the putting green. He walked seven of the last eight hitters he faced, including a bases-loaded free pass to Aaron Hill that forced in the winning run in the loss at Toronto.

As for potential replacements, the Rays could go with lefty Jon Switzer, who has a 0.77 ERA in nine appearances at Durham after opening the year on the disabled list. A return by Ruddy Lugo (1.32 ERA) is also a possibility.
