Morris Following In Father's Footsteps At Auburndale

Published: Oct 25, 2007

Like his father did so many years ago, Brandon Morris races Street Stocks at Auburndale Speedway in Polk County.

"Racing the full-size cars has been awesome from the start," said 14-year-old Brandon. "I liked it right off the bat, and I hope someday to be considered as good as my dad is now."

Brandon is the son of Wayne Morris, a Sportsman and Late Model driver at Auburndale. Wayne opened the 2007 season by winning both the Sportsman 25-lap event and the Late Model 100-lap event on the same night.

"I want to do it back-to-back like that someday," the younger Morris said. "I also hope I can get the right kind of sponsors to go to some higher levels of racing, but it takes a lot."

Brandon started racing in 1999 at age 8 in the go-kart classes at local tracks such as Lakeland's Sprocket Speedway, Auburndale's Kartway and the dirt track at Dirt Devil Speedway north of Lutz.

His mom, Donna, "didn't like it when I started so young, but now she's rooting me on louder than anyone," Brandon said. "She's my No. 1 fan, for sure."

Morris' career highlights include more than 69 go-kart trophies and the Coca-Cola 100 win at a National WKA Karting event in Jasper.

"Until I won my first Street Stock race in mid-September of this year, that Coca-Cola win was my biggest thrill," Morris said. "But starting only nine races so far this year, and being lucky enough to win two, has been really cool."
