Tampa Prep's Perkins Opts For Saint Leo

Published: May 16, 2007

Tampa Prep senior Walter Perkins, a 6-foot-6 center, signed a letter-of-intent to play for Saint Leo University on Tuesday. Perkins chose Division II Saint Leo over Eckerd College, Flagler, Winston-Salem State and Kennesaw State.

Perkins, who led the Terrapins to the Class 2A state final four, averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds this season and was also named to the Florida Sports Writers Association Class 2A all-state first team, The Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County first team and the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association All-Star team. Perkins was chosen to play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Classic, which featured some of the top players around the state.

"It gives him a great opportunity to contribute to a place close to home," Coach Joe Fenlon said. "It was hard to determine what level he was going to play. He could have gone to a Division I school, but it wasn't the right fit for him. I'm proud he chose a program that was the right fit for him."

Perkins finished his career as one of the top 40 scorers in Hillsborough County history with 1,498 points.

VOLLEYBALL: Freedom senior volleyball player Brandi Jarmon signed with Gulf Coast Community College. Jarmon, at 5-foot-4, was the libero (defensive specialist) for the Patriots this past season. Gulf Coast finished the season 15-17.
