JOEY JOHNSTON'S SIDELINES

THEIR OLD KENTUCKY HOME

Hey, these things aren't supposed to happen in Kentucky, a basketball state.

But here we go tonight with the Louisville Cardinals visiting the Kentucky Wildcats. Each school has an excellent home-grown senior quarterback - Louisville's Brian Brohm and Kentucky's Andre' Woodson - in a state not known for producing flocks of Division I-A prospects.

Brohm (6-foot-4, 226 pounds) is a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Woodson (6-foot-5, 230), who might be the SEC's best quarterback, could leap onto the Heisman short list with a victory.

No easy task. Kentucky hasn't beaten a top 10 team since 1977. No.9-ranked Louisville is going for its fifth straight win against the Wildcats.

The Brohm-Woodson matchup has been one-sided, too. Dating back to high-school meetings, Brohm's teams are 5-0 against Woodson's teams, outscoring them 219-60.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier always enjoyed gigging the Georgia Bulldogs when he was at Florida (11-1 vs. Georgia). On his Sunday television show, here's how Spurrier reacted to South Carolina's 16-12 win against the Bulldogs:

"It wasn't like they were some big, powerful team. They've actually lost five in a row to [SEC] Eastern Division opponents. Kentucky and Vandy beat 'em last year."

These are grim times at Notre Dame (0-2), which hasn't scored an offensive touchdown this season. The Irish desperately need a win today against equally desperate Michigan (0-2). Last week's 31-10 loss at Penn State was Notre Dame's fourth consecutive defeat (dating back to last season) by at least 20 points - a first in Irish history.

Here's another stunning figure, provided by ESPN.com's Pat Forde:

Of the 856 points Notre Dame has scored with Charlie Weis as head coach, only 19 have been scored by players who originally committed to and signed with him (including this season's defensive touchdown, extra point and two field goals).

The Weis recruits have accounted for one offensive touchdown in the coach's 27 games at Notre Dame - George West's 11-yard run last season against Purdue.

HANG IN THERE, DELBERT

USF's Delbert Alvarado missed four field goals in six attempts at Auburn, but his 19-yarder with 55 seconds remaining forced overtime. The Bulls won 26-23. Alvarado wasn't the only place-kicker who struggled last week:

• Minnesota's Jason Giannini missed three field goals, including one in overtime.

• But Minnesota won in OT because Trevor Cook of Miami (Ohio) missed an extra point and three field goals, including a 33-yard game winner in OT.

• Hawaii's Dan Kelly missed two of three attempts, but his 49-yarder tied the game with 1:34 remaining and the Warriors won in OT.

• East Carolina's Ben Hartman made a career-long 39-yarder on the final play to beat North Carolina 34-31. Hartman had missed three previous kicks from 30, 32 and 37 yards.

THE BUZZ

Georgia Tech's 45 points in the first half against Samford were the most by the Yellow Jackets in one half since their historic 222-0 win against Cumberland in 1916.
