Lightning Re-Sign Janik

Published: Jul 26, 2007

TAMPA - The Lightning added a familiar face to the fold in the competition for a spot on the blue line.

Defenseman Doug Janik re-signed Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract that will pay him the league minimum of $475,000 in the NHL and $100,000 in the minor leagues. He joins a group of recently signed defensemen and up-and-comers competing for the No. 6 spot on defense.

Janik, 27, appeared in 75 games with Tampa Bay last season, finishing with two goals and 11 points in his first full NHL season.

After not being issued a qualifying offer by the Lightning at the end of last season, Janik was seeking a one-way contract offer from another team. When one didn't emerge, he came back to a familiar situation.

"Inasmuch as he knows our system, he has a head coach who knows him and likes him and is comfortable with him," Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said. "And because he believes in our organization and the way we do business through the merit system, he elected to come back to Tampa rather than sign elsewhere."

No. 1 Pick Kane Signs With Blackhawks

CHICAGO - Patrick Kane, the first overall pick in last month's NHL draft, signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 18-year-old forward is a "dynamic and exciting" player who "will get every opportunity to earn a spot on the opening-night roster," General Manager Dale Tallon said.

Kane led the Ontario Hockey League in scoring last season with 62 goals and 83 assists with the London Knights and was the OHL's rookie of the year.

STAAL BROTHERS ARRESTED: Carolina Hurricanes star Eric Staal and his brother, Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins, were arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process at Eric Staal's bachelor party at a Minnesota resort.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said the brothers were among 14 arrested last weekend after authorities received several complaints about "screaming, yelling and playing loud music" at the resort in northeastern Minnesota, about two hours from the Staals' hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The sheriff said the group was warned multiple times before finally being ordered to leave the Lutsen Resort and Sea Villas in Lutsen, at which point the men gathered on a nearby highway and "began harassing motorists." That's when authorities arrested the group, around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Eric Staal, 22, is entering his fourth season with the Hurricanes. Jordan Staal, 18, was also charged with underage drinking.

DEVILS: Larry Robinson, who guided the Devils to a Stanley Cup title as the head coach in 2000, returned to the New Jersey bench as an assistant to new coach Brent Sutter.

Assistant coach John MacLean and goaltending coach Jacques Caron were retained from Claude Julien's staff, while former Devils defenseman Tommy Albelin also was named an assistant coach.

Contract terms were not disclosed by Devils president Lou Lamoriello.

Jacques Laperriere, who had been an assistant coach for the past four seasons, will not return to the staff. Lamoriello said he will remain with the organization and work with defensemen in the minor leagues.

CAPITALS: Center Brooks Laich re-signed after being awarded a one-year, $725,000 contract by an arbitrator. Laich, 24, played in 73 games last season, scoring eight goals with 10 assists.
