John Beckwith (1902-56):

Birthplace: Louisville, Ky.

Status: Player

Bio: At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Beckwith was as intimidating at the plate (72 home runs in 1927) as he was in an argument. He played first base and shortstop for a half-dozen teams during his career (1916-38), starting with the Chicago Giants. His temper was legendary; in 1925 he and a teammate fought an umpire during a game and Beckwith was forced to lay low while his teammate, fellow Hall of Fame candidate Jud Wilson, was arrested.
