• Bio: Hall of Famer Roy Campanella always credited Mackey with teaching him how to be a catcher. Mackey's defensive ability was his claim to fame, although he did bat .318 during his 20-year career. As a manager in the 1940s, he groomed future major-leaguers Monte Irvin, Larry Doby and Don Newcombe. In 1945, as a part-time player at age 48, he batted .307.
