Effa Manley (1897-1981) - ELECTED

Birthplace: Philadelphia

Status: Executive

Bio: As co-owner of the Newark Eagles with her husband, Abe Manley, Effa handled most of the business side of the organization from 1936-47. She was active in the civil rights movement and set the standard for innovative promotion of the team. Her Eagles won the World Series against the Kansas City Monarchs in 1946. Mindful of the financial blow the Negro Leagues would suffer after integration, she negotiated for payment from the majors for Negro Leagues stars, starting with Newark's Larry Doby.
