• Bio: A hard-throwing right-handed pitcher until moving to shortstop after his gave out in 1917, Mendez was a member of the inaugural class (1939) of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. He was among the best barnstorming pitchers in Cuba and the U.S. before joining the Kansas City Monarchs in 1920. In 1908, Mendez beat the touring Cincinnati Reds three times, throwing 25 scoreless innings.
