Birthplace: Carabelle, Fla.

Status: Player/manager/ambassador

Bio: The affable star of Ken Burns' documentary, "Baseball," O'Neil has become the latter-day face of the Negro Leagues. He was a fine player (he batted .345 for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1940, the height of his playing career), and an even better manager (four league championships from 1948-53). He became the first African-American coach in major-league history when he was hired by the Cubs in 1962.
